Silva was very content to allow Maia to get things started, hanging back at the beginning of the first round and only coming forward a couple of times for leg kicks. Midway through the first round Silva lunged on the ground in front of Maia, practically begging Maia to come forward, and yet Maia wouldn't take the bait. Finally Silva landed a punch that briefly dropped Maia, and he later landed a flying knee that dropped Maia as well. Overall Silva spent most of the first round dancing around on his feet, knowing that Maia isn't in his league as a striker and that he could do whatever he wanted as long as he was standing up.

The second round was more of the same, and Silva began to openly taunt Maia, begging Maia to come forward and growing visibly angry when Maia decided to hang back and hope for an opportunity to secure a takedown. Silva started to clown around so much that some of the fans in attendance could be heard laughing while others started booing. Maia never did anything to even remotely put Silva in danger, and Silva easily won the round again, bashing Maia's eyes and nose with occasional punches while he wasn't fooling around.

During the third round Silva started by standing still, then landed a few kicks and then messed around with Maia some more, then landing more kicks and dancing around in front of Maia again. During the third round UFC announcer Joe Rogan said that Silva “has got no respect for his opponent,” and that was just about the size of it: Silva was playing with Maia the way a father would play with his young son in a living-room wrestling match.

By the fourth round the crowd appeared to have turned on Silva for all his joking around, and they started to chant Maia's name. Then they started chanting, “GSP,” as if to say they wanted UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre to fight Silva and give him a tougher test than Maia could. By this point Maia's nose was badly bloodied, and the blood had dripped down onto his trunks to turn his white shorts pink.

By the start of the fifth round Maia's nose was bloodied badly and his left eye was swollen shut, but Maia showed a lot of heart in beginning to go on the attack with his striking, swinging hard and even landing a few punches. Silva started to look like he was tired, not so much from fighting as from all the dancing he had been doing. The crowd began to chant Maia's name loudly, and Maia even started to raise his arms in front of Silva the way Silva had to him. Silva responded to that by doing more screwing around — so much that referee Dan Miragliotta warned Silva about stalling and threatened to take a point away. The fight ended with the crowd booing Silva, who won his fight his way, not the way the fans wanted to see.

After traveling overnight to Prague, President Obama begins his day by immediately holding a trilateral meeting with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and host country Czech President Vaclav Klaus. Before signing the nuclear non-proliferation treaty or START, US and Russia leaders will hold a separate bilateral meeting. It is during this face-to-face meeting that President Obama is expected to push President Medvedev towards sanctions on Iran. Iran and Russia share a trade history and Russia has been reluctant to back sanctions based on that fact. Earlier in the week, Russia's pointman on Iran nuclear talks said he hoped “dialogue” would be the solution to Iran.

President Obama and President Medvedev will sign the new START Treaty and hold a joint press availability afterwards.  Watch it LIVE now! The trilateral group will have lunch together after the press conference. President Obama retires for some downtime in the afternoon before hosting a dinner with leaders from the following Eastern European countries – Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and host country Czech Republic. These countries are the new democracies and President Obama's hospitality will demonstrate that the U.S. has not downgraded the importance of their relationship. In short, President Obama needs to reassure Eastern European countries that he has not abandoned them during his negotiations with Russia. He will remain overnight in Prague.

This one is unusual …

For what it's worth, we've been hit by a number of emails in the last hour concerning a possible announcement regarding a move by US Airways on United Airlines.

While this would certainly be big news, for those of you who follow the industry (and hopefully by reading PlaneBusiness Banter), you shouldn't be surprised.

Yee haw. I hope these rumors are spot on. I'm tired of reading emails about diaper bags and charging for carryons.

Had you find out all of this?

Written on April 7, 2010 – 2:25 am | by douglasdoyle1963

Hours after 114 Chinese mine workers were rescued from the flooded Wangjialing mine, 25 coal miners were killed by an explosion at Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia. Four workers remain unaccounted for, and resuce efforts have been put on hold until methane gas can be vented out of the mine.

Charleston Gazette staff writers  Ken Ward Jr., Gary A. Harki, and Kathryn Gregory report on the apparent cause of the blast and put it in the context of recent mining tragedies in the region:

Mine safety experts who were in contact with state and federal investigators said initial reports are that the explosion involved methane that built up inside a sealed area of the mine or that leaked through mine seals.

Such a scenario would be a repeat of the 2006 Sago and Darby disasters in West Virginia and Kentucky, which claimed 17 lives and prompted regulators to take a closer look at the safety of the vast sealed areas of underground coal mines for the first time in years.

They also give details on the size of this operation and its troubling safety record:

The Upper Big Branch Mine-South employs about 200 workers and last year produced about 1.2 million tons of coal, according to company disclosures filed with MSHA.

In seven of the last 10 years, the mine has recorded a non-fatal injury rate worse than the national average for similar operations, according to MSHA statistics.

Between 2008 and last year, safety violations at the operation more than doubled and fines issued by MSHA tripled, according to agency records.

And they write about the emotional toll on victims’ families and the community as a whole:

“If you’re from here, you’re part of a coal mining family,” said Grace Lafferty of nearby Harper. “You know a lot of people who work here. It takes your breath away, your heart drops and you have that empty feeling.”

One miner from the Massey operation declined to give his name, but said, “This is scary in more ways than one.”

“We’ve been through this many times before, and we know West Virginians will band together to get through it, but it doesn’t get any easier,” [US Representative Nick] Rahall said.

… One man, a family member of a victim of the Sago disaster, drove down to be with the families, he said.

“He is able to talk to them in a way very few could,” [West Virginia Governor Joe] Manchin said.

Though names have not been released, three members of one family all died in the disaster, Manchin said. Another member of the family was also in the mine, but survived, he said. That man lost his son, nephew and older brother, said Manchin, who lost an uncle in the Farmington Mine disaster in 1968.

Our thoughts are with the families whose loved ones have been killed and are still missing. We’ll be monitoring Ken Ward’s Coal Tattoo blog for updates and more information.

WASHINGTON – A methane fireball tore through a West Virginia coal mine killing 25 miners, with four still missing early Tuesday when a buildup of toxic gases halted the search, officials said.

Mine safety officials held out little hope that the missing men could have survived the blast in the Upper Big Branch mine. They said there was only a slender chance they had reached a rescue chamber where there is clean air, food and water to last 96 hours.

The worst mining disaster in the United States for more than two decades hit Monday afternoon as miners were about to change shifts. The Upper Big Branch is in the town of Mountcoal some 50 kilometers south of Charleston, West Virginia.

"I think it is a dire situation," said Kevin Stricklin, administrator of coal for the Mine Safety and Health Administration, saying that levels of toxic gases were too high for the search to continue.

"High concentrations of methane, high concentrations of C02 and as well as the smoke basically gave a scenario where there could have been a second explosion," he said.

Bore holes were to be drilled into the sections of mine where the explosion occurred to monitor gas levels and attempt to ventilate some of the toxic fumes, said Ron Wooten, a state mine safety official.

"While it doesn't look especially promising, I can say these rescue chambers have enough food and water for 96 hours. So we won't give up hope at all," Wooten said.

Stricklin said 25 miners were confirmed killed and two others were hospitalized with injuries from the disaster.

The mine is run by Performance Coal Company, a subsidiary of Massey Energy, whose chief executive Don Blankenship issued a statement mourning the deaths.

"I want to offer my condolences to the miners' families who lost loved ones at Upper Big Branch. And I want to thank the rescue teams and the Massey members who continue to work hard on behalf of our miners and their families," he said.

Stricklin said the blast was believed to have occurred when a crew was exiting the mine in an underground vehicle around the time of a change in shifts.

Local and volunteer firefighters rushed to the scene with a fleet of ambulances.

President Barack Obama telephoned West Virginia governor Joe Manchin to offer "his deepest condolences to the those who lost loved ones earlier today in the tragic incident."

Obama offered "whatever assistance is needed in this rescue effort," a White House statement said.

Manchin, who rushed home from a vacation, said Obama had promised "every asset available" to help in the rescue effort.

"This is devastating news and our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the miners who have died," the governor said in a statement. "We are offering everything we can to assist those families at this time."

Manchin asked everyone to "pray for the miners, their families and our rescue teams."

West Virginia is a major coal producing region for the United States and there are regular mine accidents.

In January 2006, 12 people died in the Sago coal mine, owned by the International Coal Group, after they were trapped by an explosion 80 meters underground. One miner survived.

The worst-ever U.S. mining disaster was in 1907 in Monongah, West Virginia, where an explosion killed 362 workers.

According to official figures, annual mining accident fatalities have totaled less than 20 in West Virginia since 1983, except for 1991 when there were 22 and 2006 when there were 25.

West Virginia senator Jay Rockefeller said: "We are sending all of our prayers and thoughts to the brave miners and their families.

"I am working with state and federal officials to get as much information as possible and I am doing all I can to help make sure all resources are made available for this rescue effort."

I would not keep in mind all of this …

For most consumers, Apple is just another hardware manufacturer, but for technologists Apple products and services are very polarizing. On one side, Apple fanboys will consider any product released by Apple as revolutionary. Amongst Apple haters, any product released by Apple as over priced. What both sides will agree is that the iPad, like the iPhone before it, will change people's behavior and online usage patterns. For example, it was reported late 2009 that iPhone and iPod Touch users used, downloaded, streamed, and surfed more data than other smart phone users (Mashable, 2009). The iPad is not an oversize iPhone or a keyboardless netbook, the iPad is one of the first generally available products in a new mobile device category. The iPad will not cannibalize iPhone or iPod Touch sales, it will not compete with netbooks, and it is not even comparable with laptops. The iPad is truly a revolutionary product, not because of it's specs but because of its form and function and it will change how we plan, learn, and do business.

The iPad, and similar future mobile devices, will change education, health, people with disabilities, senior citizens, casual online users, casual gamers, communication, augmented reality, and more. Ask any iPhone users with kids what apps they have on their phone and you will find them listing several educational apps. The iPhone, and in particular the iPod Touch, are a great device for children, even toddlers. The simple multi-touch interface of the iPhone is easy to master for any person at any age. Devices like the iPad will be the preferred educational tool, replacing heavy, bulky, general purpose laptops.

When Apple announced the iPad, they also announced the iBooks store (Engadget, 2010). The iBooks store, and similar applications on the iPad for the Amazon Kindle book format, will make the iPad a great reading device. Where the current line of Kindles fail, the iPad will shine. An electronic book on the iPad will be read in color, enhanced with video, and decorated with animation where a book on the Kindle is slow to turn pages.

In addition to being a great device to read ebooks, browse blogs, and update your status on your favorite social networking site, the iPad will great mobile device for watch movies and stream videos. The iPad's 9.7 inch display, 10 hour battery life, and up to 64 GB makes it a perfect device for watching movies on long trips.

No one ever expected the iPhone and iPod Touch to compete with the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation PSP. The user interface, app store, and number of developers makes the iPhone, iPod Touch, and in turn the iPad into one of the best hand held gaming devices. Just like the Wii innovated gaming, not just by adding better graphics chips into the console, but by innovating the user controls with the Wii Remote the iPad has made available a whole slew of games to casual gamers that don't want to master a series of key combinations.

It is important to note that it is hard to compare the iPad with a laptop, it is like comparing apple and beige oranges. The iPad is not an oversize iPod or a keyboardless netbook, it is in a category of its own. The iPad will change users' behavior in the following 10 applications and industries including education, health, business, travel, browsing, communication, gaming, people with disabilities, senior citizens, and augmented reality.

Some thing you really should realize

Written on April 4, 2010 – 6:23 pm | by douglasdoyle1963

It is getting to the point that a girl (like Erykah Badu) can't take her clothes off in public anymore, get buck naked, make a video of it (“Window Seat”), get away with it (for awhile), without the police giving her a citation after the fact. That's what has happened in Dallas. It took a few days, but someone filed a complaint against the Queen of Neo-Soul, Erykah Badu, over her little naked walk in the park (well, “Plaza”) and the Dallas Police have issued the singer a citation for disorderly conduct.

The video in question, “Window Seat,” was shot “guerilla style” (that is, without script or paid actors — raw) in Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, the site of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The video was done in one take, Erykah Badu walking through the area amidst hundreds of people, stripping as she walked. By the video's end, Badu is completed stripped of clothing. She then mimics being shot, just about in the exact location that President Kennedy received his fatal shot, and falls to the ground.

Erykah Badu later said she made the video to get people to be aware of “groupthink,” the phenomena where a group of people suppress their individuality in order to form a cohesive opinion, regardless if some individuals actually believe the opposite of the group as a whole.

According to CNN, Dallas Police earlier this week were a group thinking (and stating) that if they had a witness to file a complaint against Erykah Badu, they could charge her with a crime. They noted that her actions were made more unpleasant by the presence of children in the video (which means they, as well as their parents and guardians, were unsuspecting victims of Badu's striptease and nakedness). Even Badu acknowledged on Twitter afterward that she “prayed” none of the children were “traumatized” by her actions.

Dallas Police announced Friday that a witness had come forward on Thursday and filed a complaint, from which authorities had filed charges. A citation of misdemeanor disorderly conduct was subsequently mailed to Dallas resident Erykah Badu's residence.

The police issued a statement: “After much discussion, it has been determined that this charge best fits her conduct when she disrobed in a public place without disregard to other individuals and children who were in close proximity.” The statement went on to say that it was up to Badu on how matters would proceed. She could either contest the charge in court or pay the fine.

If convicted, Badu faces a fine of up to $500.

Badu's single “Window Seat” is currently a hit on singles charts. The video has gone viral (of course — she's naked) on YouTube. Her latest album, “New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh,” was released on Tuesday.

CNN reported that, as yet, Erykah Badu and her representatives have made no comment on the citation.

It remains to be seen if groupthink will be involved in Badu's final decision regarding the citation and fine, or if she'll simply make the decision on her own.

Look at the following

Written on April 4, 2010 – 9:18 am | by douglasdoyle1963

As if having been videotaped naked by a peeping tom was not enough, ESPN reporter Erin Andrews is reportedly also receiving death threats. According to Andrews’ lawyer, Marshall Grossman, the sports reporter has been receiving death threats through e-mail since last year, but the mails have become even more violent lately, which compelled the celebrity’s camp to notify the FBI.

Authorities say that they already have a suspect, who is believed to reside in the East Coast. The e-mails were sexual at first, but has recently talked about murdering Andrews. The 31-year-old sportscaster has asked for additional security, but has refused to stay out of public, opting to continue appearing on Dancing with the Stars, where she is one of the celebrity contestants.

Andrews recently succeeded in having her stalker Michael David Barnett jailed for two and a half years. Barnett was sentenced for taking and spreading videos of a naked Andrews. The videos were taken through hotel room peepholes, which Barnett destroyed.

Erin Andrews — Emailer Talks 'Suicide Vest'

TMZ has more information on the emails a Newport News, Virginia man sent to ESPN's Erin Andrews … and it's scary.

TMZ broke the story that sexual as well as violent emails targeting Erin have been sent to “The Dan Patrick Show” since last September.

Law enforcement sources have given TMZ specifics about the threats to Erin, who is currently a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.”

March 29, 2010 — “Dear Dan: I hope Erin Andrews gets murdered in L.A.”

March 26, 2010 — “I hope she gets shot in the face. I would love to see if she can dance away from a hail of gunfire. That would really make my day.”

March 14, 2010 — “I would love to get close enough to her to show her my suicide vest.”

And, sources say, there are emails that pose even more of a direct threat to Erin.

We are told the FBI knows the identity of the man who sent the emails. In fact, the man didn't even try hiding his identity in the emails.

Things that is worth checking

Written on April 4, 2010 – 8:46 am | by douglasdoyle1963

The question is: Why didn’t anyone call the police at the time and file a report on their own if this was such a big deal? The woman named that’s been released to the public of who filed the report sound like she is Hispanic. It also say that the police searched for someone who witness the event because they had so many phone complaints from around the U.S (probably all Caucasians and Conservative) about this.

What is so wrong about nudity? Our children witness more than that more times than not in their household. Why is it that we get so upset about our children seeing someone in the nude and not about the profanity used, the teenager from Miss. that’s trying to bring gayness in the school, the celebs that promote sexual promiscuity and insinuate it on stage, breaking the law, coming into this country illegally, etc., and other things that are deemed negative in front of our children?

Why is it that parents want the world to be responsible for raising their children and they want to be absolved from any thing relating to the responsibility of being a parent? Why is it that we can sleep with different people in our homes without being married to them, used profanity, be nude, act like a moron, be racist, discriminate left and right, be overly sexual left and right, argumentative, alcoholics, drug users, break the law, be an illegal and have children in this country left and right knowing that we can’t afford it,etc. in front of our children in the home, but complain about someone else doing this stuff in front of them?

Your children ARE what they learn in the home and not what they see in the world. Step up parents, and do your jobs. Stop worrying about others to do that for you. It’s your responsibility and if you can explain why you do those things mention above in your household; then you can explain about a person finding liberation in being nude in the public.

Erykah Badu to Be Charged Over Nude Video

Erykah Badu will be charged with disorderly conduct over her nude video shoot that took place in the middle of Dallas … law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Our sources say the announcement will be made at a news conference held by the Dallas Police Department momentarily.

Erykah took her clothes off in the middle of Dealey Plaza — the place where JFK was assassinated in 1963 — for a music video shoot.

A Texas woman filed an indecency complaint with the PD.

UPDATE 6:17 PM ET: Cops say they have charged Badu with disorderly conduct and will mail her a citation. Badu faces up to a $500 fine.

I did not know this one …

The Writer's Shack

With Western Kentucky and the Nation's Longest Losing Streak (NLLS) enjoying a bye week, and therefore prevented from holding the top spot, the way was paved for a hot newcomer to grab the spotlight for a week.

Enter Rice. Yielding to B-10 pollsters penchant for favoring B-10 'legacy' teams over upstarts such as Ball State and Miami, Ohio, the Owls soar into the top spot as Western Kentucky, losers of 12-straight, stand by and watch.

Also, it's Showdown Week in the Sun Belt Conference as the schools forming the Florida Atlantic International Airport entry, Florida Atlantic and Florida International take on Western Kentucky and B-20 stalwart North Texas, themselves enjoying a bye week.

This week's mess:

1. Rice (0-5; lost to Tulsa 27-10)

Mitigating Factors: Tied 10-10 at halftime for the second consecutive week, Owls again dig deep to use karma, lousy defense to get outscored 17-0 in second half, this time to team nicknamed for a weather phenomenon…Owls don't even bother, punting on first five second half possessions, including key three and outs on first three…Owls currently working on fifth five (5) game losing streak since 1999.

We Are Not Making This Up: Game played before 58,580 empty seats at Rice Stadium, giving Owls 1:1,246.38 Rushing-Yards-To-Empty-Seat ratio, best in NCAA this season.

Next Loss: Navy

2. Ball State (0-5; lost to Toledo 37-30)

Mitigating Factors: Cardinals show kind of heart that wins B-10 titles recovering from taking lead with 47 seconds left in game by giving up 51-yard touchdown pass a few seconds later…Cardinals lose despite scoring on first three possessions game and only turning ball over once…Defense clutch, giving up three fourth quarter touchdowns.
What The Hell's Going On Here? Offense, which ranks as high as 95th in one official NCAA stat category, wondering what the deal is after putting 30 points up for second consecutive week in seventh straight loss.

Next Loss: at Temple

3. New Mexico (0-5; lost to Texas Tech 48-28)

Mitigating Factors: Only team in survey nicknamed after long-forgotten, moderately successful 70's singer, Lobos screw up first half drives with missed field goal, a fumble, turning it over on downs and three (3) punts…(Lobo) Defense good at tackling people for negative yardage, ranking in Top 20 in both Sacks and Tackles for Loss, but trip over each other running back to line of scrimmage, ranking 108th in Total Defense and 116th in Scoring Defense.

By The Numbers: Lobos lousy everywhere, having lost nine straight overall, four in a row at home, five straight in conference and six straight on the road.

Next Loss: at Wyoming

4. Miami, Ohio (0-5; lost to Cincinnati 37-13)

Mitigating Factors: Red Hawks still chanting “We're number two!” following nation's second-best 10th straight loss…Ten-game skid tied for longest in school history, matching historic 1987-88 squad…1987-89 teams actually went 0-18-2 during that stretch…Red Hawks actually out pass Bearcats 286 yards to 270, but 30 yards rushing, 20 unanswered points to start game, seal loss.

Red Headed Step Child: Team so bad Student Union only allowing Red Hawks to play two home games through end of October in order to work kinks out.

Next Loss: at Northwestern

5. Florida Atlantic International Airport: Florida Atlantic and Florida International (0-8; FAU: lost to Wyoming 30-28; FIU: lost to UL-Monroe 48-35)

Mitigating Factors: Wyoming, none too good themselves, can't be bothered to take first lead at FAU until third quarter, and doesn't seal game until holding FAU on downs on last possession…FIU defense recovers from scoreless first quarter to give 24 in the second quarter before putting it on cruise control in fourth straight loss.

FunFacts: There are no Fun Facts associated with either program at this time.

Next Losses: FAU: at North Texas; FIU at Western Kentucky

6. Indiana State (0-6; lost to UNI 62-7)

Mitigating Factors: I-AA Sycamores playing Hide and Seek with Continental Cup – given to team with longest all-division losing streak in North America – with 32nd straight loss…Offense produces just five (5) first downs but manages to put five rushers in double figures and entire team gets smiley points on playbook for producing first points in a month.

FunFact: Sycamore defense earns Kroger Better Value Award by giving up 157 yards passing and three touchdowns in first half on just seven completions!

Next Loss: at Illinois State (Oct. 17)

7. Washington State (1-4; lost to Oregon 52-6)

Mitigating Factors: After scoring in double figures in first three games, Cougar offense in hibernation, mustering just six (6) points in each of last two (2) games…Cougars can't even be bothered to show cursory early interest, punting on first four possessions and exploding for four (4) first downs and 51 (51) yards passing.

Don't Blame Us: Cougar special teams doing their part, too, having missed conversion kicks – probably because they don't get a whole lot of practice – in each of the last two games.

Next Loss: Arizona State

8. BCS

Mitigating Factors: Pollsters dusting off old favorite prior to first rankings coming out on Oct. 18…Usual people saying usual things about how playoffs would never work, but official NCAA playoffs currently work in three other divisions, including a man-sized 32-teamer in Division III…BCS once forgot to send the top team in both polls to title game, and from time to time will send a team not even good enough to win its conference championship to title game.
Show Me The Money: BCS schools receive roughly $1.5 million a year, a bit more if two teams from their conference make it, which is about half what Nebraska yields from one home game…It is hard to believe a playoff would not yield significantly more.

9. Army (2-3; lost to Tulane 17-16)

Mitigating Factors: Special teams key for Black Knights of Confusion, giving up go-ahead field goal with 2:20 left in game and missing own game winning attempt in final seconds…Defense does its part, too, blowing game after leading 10-0 and 16-7…Army expected to benefit from new, emergency legislation requiring opponents to gain 30 yards for a first down for the rest of the season.

Make Your Ticket Plans Now: With Air Force losing to Navy, Nov. 7 game vs. Falcons expected to be for Sgt. Bilko Trophy, symbolic of service academy lousiness.

Next Loss: Vanderbilt

10. Western Kentucky (0-4; DNP)

Mitigating Factors: Bye week teams usually given week off from B-10 humiliation, but inevitable cheap laugh based on being ranked due to a lousy week of practice too good to pass up…Also, ranking Dead Last in Scoring Defense and Rushing Defense and Next To Dead Last in Scoring Offense and Total Offense helps, too.

Close, But No Cigar: Hilltopper “defense” just four inches away from giving up an average of 300 yards rushing a game.

Next Loss: Florida International

This Week's Clash of the Titans: Entire Sun Belt Conference schedule

Other Potential Instant Classics:

Something Old, Something New: Miami, Ohio at Northwestern – B-10 upstarts invade Chicago to take B-10 Hall of Famers!

Shootout At The OK Corral: New Mexico at Wyoming – Wyoming's three wins have come against teams that have combined for four (4) wins!

Issue beneficial understanding

The situation in riot-hit parts of Hyderabad Thursday remained peaceful as police relaxed curfew in the old parts of the city.

Thousands of people, living under curfew for the last three days, came out to buy essential commodities. Long queues were seen outside grocery shops, milk booths and medical stores during the two-hour relaxation period in nine police station limits from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

No untoward incident was reported during the relaxation. Though police had announced that women and men above 50 years will be allowed to come out to buy essential goods, a large number of youth were also seen shopping in some areas like Bahadurpura as police could not strictly enforce the restrictions.

Traders exploited the situation by selling the essential commodities at exorbitant prices. In some areas milk was sold for Rs.100 a litre while vegetables cost Rs.50 per kg. Though the government had made some arrangements to supply milk and vegetables, they proved inadequate.

Curfew will be relaxed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in areas falling under the limits of eight other police stations in the old parts of the city.

Police Commissioner A.K. Khan said there would be no relaxation in eight police station areas of the new city where curfew was imposed Tuesday night after communal clashes.

The riots, which broke out last week over putting up of religious flags, have so far claimed two lives and left over 150 injured.

Last updated on Apr 1st, 2010 at 11:44 am IST–IANS

Hyderabad: The situation in riot-hit parts of Hyderabad Thursday remained peaceful while people in curfew-bound areas of the city got some relief with authorities relaxing the curfew for two hours.
No untoward incident was reported from any of the areas in the old city, where curfew was relaxed in two phases, police said.

Thousands of people, living under curfew for the last three days, came out to buy essential commodities. Long queues were seen outside grocery shops, milk booths and medical stores during the relaxation.

Though police had announced that women and men above 50 years will only be allowed to come out to buy essential goods, a large number of youth were also seen shopping in some areas like Bahadurpura as police could not strictly enforce the restrictions.

Traders exploited the situation by selling the essential commodities at exorbitant prices. In some areas milk was sold for Rs.100 a litre while vegetables cost Rs.50 per kg. Though the government had made some arrangements to supply milk and vegetables, they proved inadequate.

Police had a tough time in controlling the crowds at vegetable markets and milk booths. People complained that, taking advantage of the situation, the traders jacked up prices.

Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy told reporters that four traders were arrested for selling essential commodities at very high rates. She said the authorities supplied 28 trucks of vegetables and 45,000 litres of milk in 17 police station areas.

Curfew was relaxed from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in nine police station limits and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in eight police station limits.

Police Commissioner A.K. Khan said there would be no relaxation in eight police station areas of the new city where curfew was imposed Tuesday night after communal clashes.

The riots, which broke out last week over putting up of religious flags, have so far claimed two lives and left over 150 injured.

The home minister said a decision on relaxing curfew for Friday prayers would be taken in the evening after a review of the situation.

She said 10 more companies of paramilitary forces had reached the city and were being deployed. This is in addition to 21 companies already deployed in the riot-hit areas.
